Topping The News In 2014

In this edition of Views from the Top published in The Business Times, Achieve Group CEO Joshua Yim shared his pick of the most significant news event of 2014:

“In my opinion, the Ebola outbreak is the most significant news event of 2014 as it has already claimed more than 5,000 lives in West Africa. The horrific tragedy of Sept 11, which killed almost 3,000 people, made it almost the event of the past decade. Although the Ebola epidemic is mainly in West Africa, life anywhere in the world is precious and the number of deaths continues to climb, as the outbreak isn’t contained yet. Additionally, there is a ripple effect to Ebola as the economicramifications of the deadly virus spreading to more countries could be dire. We have witnessed how the Sars epidemic crippled many economies including Singapore’s and created a lot of fear in people worldwide. Thus, I think the threat of Ebola spinning out of control, endangering lives and economies, and causing a global pandemic is the most significant issue on the international stage at the moment.”
